Picture this: it’s around two in the afternoon on a Thursday, and that super uncomfortable tiredness sets in that you just can’t shake as much as you try. The weekend is just out of reach, and you know that you need to get through the rest of your work day and week before you’re able to kick back and relax, which hopefully means getting the chance to catch up on some much needed sleep. We’ve all been there, done that, and every time it happens it’s more annoying than the last – because of course it happens at the absolute worst times. That wall of tiredness that you just cant push through or jump over always comes when you have a huge presentation to give, an important meeting at work, or the day you’re going to a huge concert after waiting months for the day to finally come. Face it, you’ve been there too.

Most people just assume that you’re so tired because of a lack of sleep, but the truth is that there are other major reasons why you could be as tired as you are. Even if you can manage to get a decent night of 8 or even more hours of sleep, there’s still a decent chance that you’ve woken up incredibly tired after it. Of course sleep is incredibly important for human function and sanity throughout any day, but it’s definitely not the only explanation for you being tired. Here are some things that might actually be making you more exhausted than a lack of sleep.
Depression. Oh, the word I hate more than any other, just like the overwhelming feeling that it gives me when it sets in. One of the symptoms of depression has to do with sleep; while other want to sleep the days away and never get enough, others have severe insomnia because of it and don’t get nearly as much sleep as they might need to function. Either way, it’s a pretty miserable symptom that almost every person who has depression has to go through at one point or another (definitely one of my least favorite symptoms, that’s for sure). So think about it, has anything happened in your life that a bit of depression might be setting in? This alone will make anyone completely exhausted for days and weeks at a time.

Your diet. There are so many things that people put into their bodies that are super unhealthy, but a lot of them will also make you super sleepy! For example, if I eat McDonalds, I basically have to crawl into bed and sleep it off because I can’t keep my eyes open anymore. The two big things that cause you to be super tired is an increased intake of sugar in your body, as well as a lack of iron. There are easy tests that any doctor can do to see if you’re getting enough iron in your system on a regular basis, and if you’re not you can have supplemental pills to take or just increase your intake of things packed with iron, like red meat and fish.
A disorganized work space or home. As weird as it sounds, if everything around you is a total mess, it makes it a lot harder for you to get anything done and it can definitely make you just want to give up because of how tired you are just looking at it! Whether it’s just a cluttered office space, a sink full of dishes that have been piling up for the past week, or that laundry that you’ve been putting off for way too long, you’ll definitely become exhausted just being around it so much.
