Every time you turn on the news, you’ll see new stories about studies that have been conducted stating how something that is generally used a lot in everyday life will be affecting or not affecting your health. It seems like every time you turn around there’s a new story that’s being aired or written about along those lines, as psychologists and scientists are constantly conducting these studies to find correlations between these things. Whether or not they are filled with true information is a whole other story, but that won’t stop news anchors and journalists from publishing their findings for the public to make up their own minds. And now there has been a study conducted about sperm count and cellphones, exploring the possibility of cellphones causing men to have lower sperm counts. So maybe men should start thinking about taking their phones out of their front pockets if they’re planning on having children in the near or even distant future!

Technion — Israel Institute of Technology conducted a study to determine whether having your cellphone in your front pocket will affect a man’s sperm count. Over the course of a year, the researchers examined over 100 men, some who would keep their phones in their front pockets and others who avoided keeping their cellphones there. The researchers wanted to conduct this research because they were curious to see if cellphones, especially newer and fancier models, were causing men to have lower sperm counts, and in turn causing them to not be able to produce sperm and impregnate a women as easily as a man who has a higher sperm count.

Each participant in the study filled out a survey for the researchers, which included information as to whether or not they carry their cellphones in their front pockets or not. They also included other questions in the short survey, such as approximately how long they spent each day talking on the phone. The survey information showed that out of the men who kept their phones in their pockets, approximately 47% of them had a low sperm count. Compared to the fact that only 11% of the male population worldwide has problems with low sperm levels, this was very high for them to find. It was also found in the research that those men who spent more than one hour a day talking on their cellphones were twice as likely to result in a low sperm count compared to those men who spent less time talking on their cellphones.

When asked to give a statement, Professor Martha Dirnfeld from Technion – Israel Institute of Technology said, “The [sperm] levels were down to a number that would make conception difficult. If you are trying for a baby and it doesn’t happen within a year you might want to think of whether it could be your mobile phone habit that is to blame.” She went on to say that the heat given off from the cellphone in combination with the amount of electromagnetic activity that it radiates is what is probably causing the lowered sperm counts for the men involved. Another statement was given from Professor Gedis Grudzinskas of St George’s Hospital which stated “If you wear a suit to work put the mobile in your chest pocket instead of close to your testes. It will reduce the risk of your sperm count dropping or dropping so much. And do you need to keep the phone right next to you on the bedside table. Some men keep their mobile in their shorts or [pajamas] in bed. Is that really necessary?”
