Just when you think that people around the world can’t get any stupider, someone always has to try to raise the stupid bar a little bit higher. These days it seems like people will do anything for a great picture, a good selfie, a fantastic vine or a perfect tweet just to boost their popularity on a plethora of social media websites(and in turn their self esteem). And this time, unfortunately, an innocent and endangered animal was caught in the crossfire of someone’s stupidity and greed, and an adorable little life was sadly lost in the process.
Last month in Argentina, a cute baby dolphin was found by a few people visiting the beach, and instead of letting it run in the wild ocean they took the baby dolphin out of the water and out on to land. And of course, stupid people didn’t realize that a dolphin needs the ocean to survive, and they insisted on passing it around so that everyone in the area could get selfies with the dolphin. But then, of course, it passed away from being exposed to the open air on land for too long, which is such a shame.
To make matters worse, the breed of dolphin that this particular one was is actually incredibly endangered. There are only approximately 30,000 Franciscan dolphins left in the ocean as of this time, and thanks to a bunch of selfish idiots there is now one less in the ocean. It would still be a completely tragic and stupid thing to have happened even if the dolphin was not on the vulnerable watch list from the Argentine Wildlife Foundation, but this just increases how tragic the whole thing actually was. I wonder if those people who were responsible for the death of this baby dolphin still think it was that important and cool to pass around a helpless creature just to get a quick selfie with it?
After the beach incident, the Argentine Wildlife Foundation put out the following statement: “The potential for recovery of this species is very low. The Franciscan, like other dolphins, can not long remain above water. It has a very thick and greasy skin that provides warmth, so the weather will quickly cause dehydration and death. This incident should serve to remind people about he need to return these dolphins to the sea if one is found outside of the water. It’s fundamental that people help rescue these animals because every Franciscan has value.”
The video of the event is absolutely disturbing to say the least, as you watch a man take the baby dolphin out of it’s habitat of the water, while dozens of people flock around him to look at it in his arms. It turns out that if you watch the video caught and aired from CBS News, people actually continued to keep taking photos of and with the baby dolphin while it was gasping for it’s final breaths, and even when it had already passed on. At the end of the video, the baby dolphin has been placed in the mud on the beach, not making a move and presumed to have died from being handled by so many people on land. It is incredibly unfortunate that so many irresponsible people were there and this tragic thing happened, cutting the life of a baby dolphin to probably one year when it could have lived to be about 20.
